Under £250 is the most crowded bracket in UK television, and the most misunderstood. It covers two genuinely different products: 43-inch 4K sets that can serve as a main living room screen, and 32-inch HD sets built for bedrooms, kitchens and student rooms. Three of the eight picks in this guide are 4K, all of them 43 inches; the rest are Full HD or HD panels at 32 to 40 inches. Deciding which group you are shopping in matters far more than anything on the spec sheet, because a 43-inch 4K set at this price makes compromises elsewhere — thinner sound, fewer published specifications, less picture processing — while a 32-inch HD set spends its budget on the platform instead. The second decision is live television. Freely streams BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 over your broadband with no aerial, which is the difference between usable and useless in a rented room without an aerial point; two picks here list it. Freeview Play, on one further pick, still expects an aerial socket. The remaining sets leave live UK channels to catch-up apps or a set-top box, and that is worth knowing before the box arrives rather than after.

Buying guide

What to look for in TVs Under £250

  1. Work out which product you are buying first: a 43-inch 4K set for a sitting room at roughly 1.6–2.2 metres, or a 32–40 inch HD set for a bedroom or kitchen at 1.2–1.8 metres. At this budget you cannot have both.
  2. 4K matters less than the upscaler at this price, because Freeview and Freely broadcast at 1080i or below — a well-processed Full HD panel can look better on live UK TV than a raw 4K one.
  3. Check the live-TV route: Freely needs only broadband, Freeview Play needs an aerial socket in that room, and a set with neither means catch-up apps or a Sky, Virgin or Freeview box.
  4. Under £250 the sound is where corners get cut. Look for a published audio format — Dolby Audio, DTS Virtual:X or DTS X — rather than assuming, and budget for a soundbar if the room is noisy.
  5. Count the HDMI ports before you buy. A console, a soundbar and a set-top box is three, and budget sets are exactly where the third port disappears.
  6. The published energy label class is the only comparable efficiency figure UK retailers must show — worth a glance when the set will be on for several hours a day.

Our process

How we choose our picks

We don’t lab-test products ourselves. Instead we synthesise the strongest independent evidence — current Amazon UK listings, verified-buyer feedback, published specs and UK pricing — into clear, honest recommendations. We earn a commission if you buy through our links, but that never changes which products we rank.

  • Current UK availability

We only shortlist products actively listed and in stock on Amazon UK, checked against live catalogue data — not last year’s models.

  • Publicly visible buyer feedback

We look at how each product is received by UK shoppers — its overall rating standing and the praise or complaints that recur in public reviews — rather than relying on a single reviewer’s opinion.

  • Published specs & value

We compare manufacturer specifications, typical UK price bands, warranty and running costs so each pick is right for a real budget and use-case.

  • UK-specific fit

We factor in UK voltage, plug/fitting standards, CE/UKCA marking and Consumer Rights Act cover — details that generic global lists miss.

What we like

  • An α7 AI Processor Gen8 handles the 4K upscaling, which is the part that matters most on sub-4K British broadcast content
  • HDR10 is published, which more than half the picks in this guide cannot say
  • Google Cast and Apple AirPlay 2 are both built in, so any phone in the house can throw content at the screen
  • Filmmaker Mode strips out post-processing to show films at their intended frame rate and aspect ratio

Worth noting

  • 60Hz — fine for 4K at 60fps, but not a panel for high-frame-rate console gaming
  • No Freely or Freeview Play is listed, so live UK channels need an aerial, a box, or catch-up apps

PHILIPS

What we like

  • HDR10+ applies frame-by-frame optimisation of colour, contrast and brightness rather than a single static curve
  • Dolby Atmos processing from the built-in speakers, which is unusual to find published in this bracket
  • Philips' Pixel Precise Ultra HD engine works on sharpness, colour and motion instead of passing the signal straight through
  • Titan OS keeps the homepage uncluttered with search across the main streaming services

Worth noting

  • Titan OS is newer than Fire TV, Roku or webOS — check that the apps you rely on are supported before buying
  • No refresh rate is published, so treat it as a streaming panel rather than a gaming one

VELTECH

What we like

  • The only Roku set in this guide, and the simplest interface here for a shared flat or a less tech-confident household
  • 4K UHD with HDR at the lowest outlay of any 43-inch pick in this guide
  • Freeview Play sits alongside Netflix, Apple TV+, BBC iPlayer and ITVX on one home screen
  • Three HDMI ports and two USB ports keep a console, a soundbar and a set-top box connected at once

Worth noting

  • Energy class F, which sits toward the bottom of the current UK A–G energy label scale
  • Freeview Play still expects an aerial socket for live channels, unlike a Freely set

Hisense

Best for Aerial-Free Live TV
Hisense 40E4QTUK 40" FHD LED TV with Freely — product image

Hisense 40E4QTUK 40" FHD LED TV with Freely

Resolution
Full HD

Freely, Netflix, Disney+, YouTube
Audio
Dolby Audio, DTS Virtual:X

What we like

  • Freely built in — live UK channels and on-demand content stream over broadband with no aerial required
  • Direct-lit full-array backlight puts LEDs behind the whole panel rather than around the edge, for more even brightness
  • Natural Colour Enhancer plus a wide viewing angle, which matters when the whole family is not sat directly in front
  • Dolby Audio and DTS Virtual:X are both published, with dedicated Games and Sports modes

Worth noting

  • Full HD rather than 4K — the trade for the backlight, the processing and Freely at this price
  • No refresh rate is published, so the Games Mode is about latency and picture settings rather than frame rate

Toshiba

Best 32-Inch Pick
Toshiba 32" HD Smart Fire TV with Freely — product image

What we like

  • Freely built in — press the button on the remote and live UK channels stream over Wi-Fi with no aerial
  • Fire TV puts every streaming app on one home screen, which keeps a second-room set simple to operate
  • TRU Resolution and TRU Micro Dimming processing rather than an unassisted budget panel
  • DTS X audio processing wraps the sound field wider than the plain stereo most small sets ship with

Worth noting

  • HD resolution on a 32-inch panel — a second-room set, not a living room one
  • Freely relies on a solid Wi-Fi signal reaching that room, so check the router coverage first

HYE

Best Tizen Pick

The Tizen route into a second room: Samsung's software and Gaming Hub on a slim HD Ready panel.

Screen Size
32 inches

Smart Os
Samsung Tizen OS with Gaming Hub

What we like

  • Samsung's Tizen platform, so the interface, recommendations and voice control behave like a Samsung set
  • Samsung Gaming Hub for cloud game streaming, or plug a console into HDMI for casual play
  • Near-frameless bezel and a slim, light body designed to wall-mount in a bedroom or compact living space
  • Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube and BBC iPlayer are pre-loaded, so no streaming stick is needed

Worth noting

  • HD Ready resolution — sharpness is what you trade for the platform here
  • No HDR format, refresh rate or audio specification is published, so the listing sells the platform rather than the screen

What we like

  • The lowest-priced pick in this guide, and a complete Fire TV set rather than a screen needing a streaming stick
  • Apple AirPlay built in for mirroring photos, video or an entire screen from an iPhone, iPad or Mac
  • Dolby Audio and DTS Virtual:X processing on the built-in speakers
  • Alexa on the remote for search, volume, channel changes and smart home control

Worth noting

  • HD resolution with no published HDR format — a functional streaming screen rather than a picture upgrade
  • No Freely or Freeview Play is listed, so live UK channels need an aerial, a box or catch-up apps

Amazon

Best Fire TV Hardware

Dolby Audio

What we like

  • Wi-Fi 6 and a quad-core processor — the only pick in this guide to publish either, and it shows in how fast apps open
  • Omnisense sensors wake the display as you walk in and show artwork through the Ambient Experience
  • Amazon Luna cloud gaming and free Appstore titles run on the set without a console
  • Fire TV Alexa Voice Remote with preset app buttons keeps the household down to one remote

Worth noting

  • The most expensive pick in this guide — you are buying speed, sensors and the Amazon ecosystem rather than picture quality
  • 720p resolution at 32 inches, so it is firmly a bedroom or kitchen set despite the price

Editor's Note

The interesting tension in this bracket is between resolution and processing. The LG 43UA75006LA and Philips 43PUS7000 both put real picture engines behind a 4K panel — an α7 AI Processor Gen8 and Pixel Precise Ultra HD respectively — and both publish an HDR format, which is rare here. The Hisense 40E4QTUK takes the opposite approach: a Full HD panel with a direct-lit full-array backlight, Natural Colour Enhancer and Freely, on the reasonable argument that British broadcast content is not 4K to begin with. Both approaches are defensible. What is not defensible at this price is a set that publishes nothing at all about its panel, and several picks lower down this guide sell the smart platform rather than the screen.

Our Take

Under £250 the sensible advice is to buy the biggest well-processed panel your room can take, and accept that the sound will need help eventually. The LG is the one for a UK sitting room, the Hisense is the one for a room with no aerial socket, and the Xiaomi is the one for a spare room where the requirement is simply that Netflix works. The Amazon Ember is the odd one out: it is the priciest set here, on one of the four 32-inch panels in this guide.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

Can you buy a 4K TV for under £250 in the UK?
Yes. Three of the eight picks in this guide are 4K — the LG 43UA75006LA, the Philips 43PUS7000 and the VELTECH 43-inch Roku TV — and all three are 43 inches. What you give up compared with a more expensive 4K set is refresh rate, panel technology and, in some cases, any published HDR specification at all.
What is the best TV size for under £250?
43 inches is the largest size that appears in this bracket and suits a UK sitting room at 1.6–2.2 metres viewing distance. Below that, 32 to 40 inches is the bedroom and kitchen range and buys you a better platform or better sound for the same money. Measure the alcove or the TV unit first — in most British living rooms the furniture, not the budget, sets the ceiling.
Which TVs under £250 work without an aerial?
Sets with Freely. In this guide the Toshiba 32-inch Fire TV and the Hisense 40E4QTUK both list it, and both stream live BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 over your broadband instead of an aerial. The VELTECH pick lists Freeview Play, which still needs an aerial for live channels but adds catch-up on top. The rest rely on individual streaming apps.
Is a cheap TV worth it, or should I save for a better one?
It depends on the room. For a bedroom, kitchen or spare room where the set runs for an hour or two a day, the picks in this guide do the job and the money is better spent elsewhere. For a main living room used every evening, the things budget sets cut — sound quality, refresh rate, HDR support and picture processing — are exactly the things you notice over years of ownership, so stretching to the next bracket usually pays.
Do TVs under £250 have HDR?
Some publish it, most do not. In this guide the LG lists HDR10, the Philips lists HDR10+ and the VELTECH lists HDR — three of the eight picks. The rest publish no HDR format at all. Treat an unlisted HDR specification as standard dynamic range: at this price, panel brightness is usually too low for HDR to do much even where the set accepts the signal.
